MSG and Weight Gain

What is MSG? The acronym stands for Monosodium Glutamate and is the sodium salt of glutamic acid. MSG is naturally-occurring non-essential amino acids and believe it or not, MSG is found in tomatoes, Parmesan, potatoes, mushrooms and other vegetables and fruits. The food industry uses MSG as a flavor enhancer that intensifies the meaty savory flavor of food just like naturally occurring glutamate does in stews and meat soups. Well, one might ask, “If MSG naturally occurs in healthy ingredients like fruits and vegetables, why is it harmful to us?” That’s a good question. Let me answer it like this, sugar is found in fruits but we are learning that refined processed sugar is poison. Just like coca leaf tea is natural and in the Andes, the locals use it as a nutraceutical as it has medicinal qualities and is non-additive. However, once the coca leaf is refined and processed into cocaine, it then becomes the pharmaceutical of the coca leaf and we all know that cocaine is highly addictive and destructive to one’s health. So anytime we isolate and concentrate an ingredient found in nature, the inherent dangers are always present like high fructose corn syrup or refined white flour. Nature provides a complex array on vitamins and minerals and when eaten in its raw form (unprocessed) there are a variety of benefits including weight loss.

“MSG and free glutamates are used to enhance flavor in about 80% of all processed foods.” – Raymond Francis, M.Sc. MIT. MSG and free glutamates has as many as fifty names including; Hydolyzed Soy Protein, Free Glutamic Acid, Sodium Caseinate, Citrate, Hydolyzed Vegetable Protein, Monoammoniam Glutamate, Maltodextrin, Soy Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Concentrate, Autolyzed Yeast Extract etc.

Sugar and cocaine are highly addictive and MSG when concentrated in food is highly addictive and produces fat gain. Why and how? MSG excites a part of the brain that triggers the fat program. For example, to study obesity in mice, one has to make a mouse fat. How does one do that? The protocol scientist use to make mice fat is to feed them MSG. They are called “MSG obesity induced mice.” No wonder two-thirds of Americans are either overweight or obese. If one is overweight or obese, all one has to do is document their daily diet. I’d say an average working American will grab a cup of coffee at home or outside and add some sugar or artificial sweetener which is almost as bad as refined white sugar due to the chemical changes artificial sweeteners create in one’s body. Add sugary cereal or carbohydrates like a bagel or a croissant which immediately converts to sugar in one’s body. At work, they might snack on processed foods like crackers or potato chips. For lunch, they might join their friends for fast food which is highly processed and/or fried or opt for a “healthier choice” like Subway’s but not understanding that bread and processed meat is not that healthy. In the afternoon, they might snack on a candy bar or other processed snacks from the vending machine and wash it down with a soft drink. For dinner, they might go to a drive thru or pick up something made in a restaurant that uses some form of MSG or pop in a frozen dinner which also has MSG. For desert, they might add a piece of cake or pie with sugar and refined white flour. Is it any wonder that Americans are the fattest and sickest nation in the world?

So what is the solution? Food education, a will to change one’s lifestyle choices and adopting a healthy lifestyle balanced with healthy foods and exercise. I’d also advise that someone who is willing to make these changes consult with a physician.
